A: No. Dark House does not charge reading fees and all submissions are reviewed free of charge.

A: No. Dark House operates on a commission-only basis. We do not charge upfront fees, administration fees or representation fees. We only earn when our clients earn.

Q: Do you accept submissions of short story collections?
A: Yes, we are happy to consider short story collections that fall within our areas of interest.

Q: Do you accept novellas?
A: Yes. We welcome novella submissions within the genres we represent.

Q: Do you accept submissions from other genres?
A: Dark House specialises in horror, dark fantasy, speculative fiction and adjacent dark narrative works. We do not currently represent genres outside these areas.

Q: Can I submit more than one manuscript at a time?
A: Yes. If you wish to submit multiple projects, please submit each manuscript separately and ensure that each submission follows our guidelines.

Q: How long does it take to receive a response?
A: Response times vary depending on submission levels and the nature of the material submitted. Due to the number of submissions received, we are unable to guarantee a specific response time.

Q: What makes a submission stand out?
A: We are particularly drawn to distinctive voices, compelling storytelling, memorable characters, atmospheric settings, originality and projects that demonstrate both creative ambition and commercial potential.

Q: You have turned down my submission. What do I do next?
A: We appreciate the opportunity to review your work. Literary representation is highly selective, and many excellent manuscripts are not offered representation. We encourage writers to continue developing their craft, seek feedback where appropriate and continue submitting future work. A decision not to represent one project does not prevent future submissions to Dark House.
Q: Can I have feedback on my submission?
A: Unfortunately, we are unable to provide detailed feedback on every submission we receive. However, feedback may occasionally be offered where we believe a project shows particular promise or where we would like to see revised material.

Q: Does Dark House represent authors internationally?
A: Yes. We welcome submissions from writers based both within the United Kingdom and internationally.

Q: What do you mean by ‘Children’s Horror and Dark Fantasy’?
A: We are interested in children’s books that use age-appropriate elements of horror, dark fantasy, mystery or the supernatural. While most horror stories are not suitable for children, many young imaginations have been captivated by spooky tales — from adventures with friendly ghosts to journeys down “a dark, dark street with a dark, dark house”. The emphasis should be on atmosphere, imagination, adventure and wonder, rather than graphic or extreme horror. We are looking for children’s stories that draw on the conventions of horror and dark fantasy in a way that is carefully handled and appropriate for the intended age group.

Q: What rights does Dark House represent?
A: Depending on the project and client, Dark House may represent publishing, film, television, adaptation and related rights. Rights representation will always be discussed and agreed directly with the client.
