Q: Do you charge a reading fee?
A: No. Dark House does not charge reading fees and all submissions are reviewed free of charge.
Q: Do you charge any fees when taking on a client?
A: No. Dark House operates on a commission-only basis. We do not charge upfront fees, administration fees or representation fees. We only earn when our clients earn.
Q: Does Dark House represent writers internationally?
A: Yes. We welcome submissions from writers and screenwriters based both within the United Kingdom and internationally.
Submitting to Dark House
Q: Do you accept submissions from other genres?
A: Dark House specialises in horror, dark fantasy, speculative fiction and adjacent dark narrative works. We do not currently represent genres outside these areas.
Q: Do you accept submissions of short story collections?
A: Yes, we are happy to consider short story collections that fall within our areas of interest.
Q: Do you accept novellas?
A: Yes. We welcome novella submissions within the genres we represent.
Q: What do you mean by ‘Children’s Horror and Dark Fantasy’?
A: We are interested in children’s books that use age-appropriate elements of horror, dark fantasy, mystery or the supernatural. While most horror stories are not suitable for children, many young imaginations have been captivated by spooky tales — from adventures with friendly ghosts to journeys down “a dark, dark street with a dark, dark house”. The emphasis should be on atmosphere, imagination, adventure and wonder, rather than graphic or extreme horror. We are looking for children’s stories that draw on the conventions of horror and dark fantasy in a way that is carefully handled and appropriate for the intended age group.
Q: Can I submit more than one manuscript at a time?
A: Yes. If you wish to submit multiple projects, please submit each manuscript separately and ensure that each submission follows our guidelines.
Q: Do you accept simultaneous submissions?
A: Yes. We understand that writers may submit their work to more than one agent or agency at a time. If you receive an offer of representation while your work is under consideration by Dark House, please let us know as soon as possible.
Q: How long does it take to receive a response?
A: Response times vary depending on submission levels and the nature of the material submitted. Due to the number of submissions received, we are unable to guarantee a specific response time.
Q: What happens if you request my full manuscript or additional material?
A: A request for further material means that we would like to consider the project in greater depth. It does not constitute an offer of representation. We may request a full manuscript, complete script or other supporting material depending on the project.
Q: Can I have feedback on my submission?
A: Unfortunately, we are unable to provide detailed feedback on every submission we receive. However, feedback may occasionally be offered where we believe a project shows particular promise or where we would like to see revised material.
Q: You have turned down my submission. What do I do next?
A: We appreciate the opportunity to review your work. Literary representation is highly selective, and many excellent manuscripts are not offered representation. We encourage writers to continue developing their craft, seek feedback where appropriate and continue submitting future work. A decision not to represent one project does not prevent future submissions to Dark House.

Q: Do you accept screenplays?
A: Yes. Dark House considers selected horror and dark fantasy screenplays for film and television. Please refer to our Submissions page for current screenplay categories and submission requirements.
Q: What rights does Dark House represent?
A: Depending on the project and client, Dark House may represent publishing, film, television, adaptation and related rights. Rights representation will always be discussed and agreed directly with the client.
Q: I am a publisher, editor, producer, scout or rights professional. How should I contact Dark House?
A: Please use our dedicated Industry Enquiries page for publishing, rights, screen and other professional enquiries. The Industry Enquiries form should not be used for author submissions.
